Detroit does not have enough Oi bands, hell the midwest does not have enough Oi bands. I don't profess to be an expert on what defines Oi, or what is and what isn't. But I do think I know good, and Bad Assets for a three song CD is good! Take two parts Death In Custody Ralph on vocals, Ali on drums, add in Matt Assault on guitar with John Elbeau on bass you have band that may in the long run should have some broad appeal. This what I mean about Oi. To me, the music represents working class values, ethics, and family, You would think especially in these times music like this by bands like this would be much more popular.
Wasted Generation leads off the CD and is straight away my favorite cut, upbeat groove sing along lyrics, and Ralph who has one of the most "hardcore" voices I've heard sings the song with, I gotta admit, a surprisingly adept melodic voice. Factory Rat is one song we all should identify with, at least anyone who punches a clock day in and day out anyway. The vocals here are again done with the sing a long in mind with the music chugging right along with it. Wednesday Night Warrior does not break the mold set with the first two songs, and I can just picture the bootboys raising thier fists in the air shouting out the chorus. WWW seems to have the best production values out of the three tunes, with the drums being a little more up front, and it makes a difference in the overall sound.
I'm looking forward to hearing more from these boys, three song is just enough to tease, but its a damm good start. They'll fit right in with some of the area's best and best known street punk and Oi bands. CL1, Iron Clad, Cavity Creeps, and now add Bad Assets to that short list.
Like I said, we need more Oi bands, more specifically, bands like this.
