Detroit isnt usually known for producing,at least now a days fun music. It tends to crank out angry young men, rebellious young women, shit strirring, metallic, pissed off, speed freak, over the top bands. Not that this is a bad thing but... How many bands these days out of Detroit or where ever you may be for that matter are know for producing FUN music. Music that gets you moving, rock n roll that makes sing along, primal feel it in your bones stuff?? The Ruiners are that band, and their new CD happy Bitrthday Bitch (out on 8/24/10 on Pravda records) is that Fun CD. Maybe even the most fun you'll have lsitening to a CD all year.

I don't claim to be any kinda music expert, or totally up to speed on whats out there ,especially with new stuff from across the world.I used to really pick em when I was reading all kinds of music publications as a youngin, from the well known rags to the obscure zines I read them all. I could pick the diamonds out of a stack of rubbish. My pals in the 80's and for part of the 90's could testify to the fact that I seemed to have gift for picking up on bands that were gonna either be huge or make splash. Now that Im an old fart and kinda stuck in my ways I seek out what I like and most of that is old stuff so I don't hear as much new music as I used to.Especially when it comes to rock music. AOR radio is a diatribe in waiting and I'll spare you my opinions about its state today.

I take a lot of pride in being the average Dad, but I take the same pride about being a little different also. I try to instill in my kids that different is good, and most of all don't be a follower. So it's with teeth grinding that I hear one of them listening to the latest flavor of the month pop star on Disney, High School Musical, or worse yet and most infuriating top 40 radio. My youngest ones are 7, so it's not like I can hand them The Exploited, UK Subs, or even AC/DC and expect them to get it, let alone like it.(Although Nicholas does own a Ramones CD he picked out himself) I don't want "dads music" to scare them off. I keep the brutal angry stuff out of their earshot, and largely this works for everyone. They see how much fun I have playing, watching and listening to my music and they are expressing an interest in it. But what can I give them, that rocks, isn't wimpy cookie cutter music, and has an edge to it???

CD Reviews: Review - CL1 and First Offense split CD
Whoever came up with the idea of putting Toledo's CL1 and Akron's First Offense together for a split CD ought to have a gold star put on their forehead. Those of you who didn't make it past the first grade, its a good thing that teachers do for students who put forth a good effort and achieved something. Well heck, as long as we are giving away gold stars then we might as well give them to each band. Both CL1 and First Offense have studied hard and come up with a 10 split CD that's a great listen from start to finish.

CD Reviews: CD Review- Rammstein-Leibe Ist Fur Alle Da
I had very low expectations for this record based on the first single.Recent Rammstein albums have been choppy and inconsistent. This is not the case on this record, its the most consistent record they've done since their American debut.Even the slower songs fit in to the flow of the album.
If you like German metal/industrial music done by one of the godfather bands of it, go now to your local record sale venue.

CD Reviews: -Jello Biafra 7 The Guantanamo School Of Medicine-The Audacity Of Hype
Jello Biafra, hated or loved you cant deny the mans influence on punk, and rock n roll in general. The mighty Dead Kennedy’s have largely turned into a touring tribute band, no better than the guys slinging Guns N Roses tunes at the local pub, (hey, really is there any new music in the works?) only they are raking in cash with kids going to see em so they can get a taste of the 80’s. Jello in the meantime built up a well respected record company, entertained and informed us with spoken word tours/CD’s. The musical projects he’s come out with since the DK’s original bust up have been ok, ( LARD especially so)but nothing Id say was for the ages, nothing earth shatteringly great.

CD Reviews: False Alarm-Fuck Em All We've Allready(Now)Won/Youth Gone Mad split CD
False Alarm sounds exactly like you'd expect from a record with Cheetah Crome (Dead Boys) on it. It reminds me a ton of the Dead Boys "We Have Come For Your Children". Everything flat out rocks, but nothing jumps off the page, because everything rocks. So it gets hard to separate the tracks in your mind's eye without repeated listenings. But "No Choice" did stand out a bit. It's a great everything louder then everything else album.

Detroit does not have enough Oi bands, hell the midwest does not have enough Oi bands. I don't profess to be an expert on what defines Oi, or what is and what isn't. But I do think I know good, and Bad Assets for a three song CD is good! Take two parts Death In Custody Ralph on vocals, Ali on drums, add in Matt Assault on guitar with John Elbeau on bass you have band that may in the long run should have some broad appeal. This what I mean about Oi. To me, the music represents working class values, ethics, and family, You would think especially in these times music like this by bands like this would be much more popular.

I’m 42 years old, many years of braving pits to be up front, and playing hockey have left my back a mess. Not complaining, but there is a level of precaution I take at certain shows. Like hockey, photographing a punk show is all about position. You can beat a faster, younger, and stronger opponent simply by being in the right position at the time. These measures MUST be taken every time you venture to see Detroit’s Death In Custody.

Rust encrusted chords ,primitive guttural rhythms with snotty irreverent vocals that sound like your little mental case brother is belting them out, this is what Circus Boys sounds like to me. I couldn't dig it any more than I do already. "Are You For Real" represents to me what keeps me intrigued and still loving punk rock. Skid Marx on bass, Mike (Aka CircusBoy) on vocals, Gary Adams on guitar, Margaret Dollrod on Guitar, Greasy Carlisi on guitar, Sean Murtagh on drums, and Derek Murtagh on guitar are all well recorded and well traveled music veterans who have not lost their lust for wreaking havoc onstage, and evidently in the studio too, with this release. Ten songs that pay homage to the shit that started it all for us, the Stooges, Dead Boys ect., and they do it better than 98% of the bands passing themselves off as old school these days.

CD Reviews: CD-Review-The Loose Screws-Have Another brew
Gimme a tall glass, plenty of ice, mix in metallic riffs, the occasional melodic lead line, shake in grizzled vocals, with a liberal amount of bottom end bass and rocket fueled drumming, blend on hi for 43 minuets and chase with a keg of frothy on tap beer, pitcher and pitchers of beer. The Loose Screws out of Marietta, Georgia make no bones about where their loyalties and hearts (and livers) go with just about all of the disc aptly titled Have Another Brew

The Black Knots out of Huntington West Virginia came out of coal country a couple years back with a masterpiece of rock n roll bravado called Hell Bent To Kick It Out, and they did they kicked it so good they signed two recording deals last year. It was the best rock n roll record of the year hands down. Fast forward a year and you have Bobby Balboa( Pistol Whippers) added to the band on guitar along with the veteran axe slinger Greg Gatlin, Capt. D on drums and on lead vocals and Bass Jerry Lee Queen recording their follow up titled Guitarmageddon. Now that takes brass ones to title an album like that, its brash and could be an attention getter for that you had better back it up boys.

CD Reviews: They Never Sleep- Mother Nature Sings Her Lullaby
I could easily start off going on and on about They Never Sleep and their band member's storied and historic musical pasts, with the likes of the Godbullies, Thrall, Inside Out ect... but that might suggest I was predisposed to liking them before I heard them. Was I intrigued by the thought of Mike Hard ,Karen Neal ( aka Queen Bee) David B.Livingstone, and Adam Berg performing and recording together? You bet I was .Especially after seeing them live.

I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing many very cool CDs over the last couple of years. Some of them were downright challenging, others kind of intimidating. I mean how do you review a CD by one your “heroes” with objectivity? Now this is the first time I’ve reviewed a release by The Meatmen. I’m very much aware of the influence Tecso Vee and the boys have had on many bands and how classic many regard the bands back catalog. So it’s not without a sense of history I approach the first release by The Meatmen in I dunno…… many years.

Regular readers already know how high my regard for the band Grommet is, and how I thought Feeding the Hand That Bites was THE best cd released at the time. So could it be equaled or topped by the band that produced it? I must admit, a little axiousness when I see a picture of a piano in the studio, and that it was being recorded at the studio Kid Rock helped make, Rustbelt Studios. It didn't help being told by Dustin that the band would be exploring some new directions with the new CD.

Get three grizzled road warrior lifers together such as Brian Laforge (Bass) formerly with Dethtoll, Stohl'n and Hollow, Scott "Cracker" MacEachern's stints with Spor and Wretched Vermin, and then Todd Evans with time served with Porn Flakes, Lazy American Workers and GWAR to form a musical project what would you get?

This trio has lots of experience behind them, veteran guys from bands like the Porn Flakes, Lazy American Workers, The Rave-Ups, ect... with resumes like this you'll have one of two results. Craggy out of step fucks who think they can lay shit on disc and it'll be great no matter what, or three guys who rock the fuck out just because they still love it and it shows in their music. Lucky for me they are the latter.

The Damned in all its incarnations has always been one of those stranded on a desert island bands. Always a CD or two in the car, or in the CD changer at home. The only record they did that never even grew on me was Music for Pleasure. I dunno, most think highly of it... it never cut it for me. I was even a fan of the Not Of This Earth version of the band that Dave Vanian won't even recognize as a Damned album. I thought Grave Disorder was a roaring comeback for them with Capt and crew in fine form.

CD Reviews: Seven Dirty Words - Hard Boiled & Dirty
Watch the news lately and the talking heads on TV will have you believe Americans are not good at much anymore expect maybe making mega huge corporations bigger, inventing new ways to deep fry all kinds of shit, and making stars of people we wouldn't want living next door to us. I happen to believe different. A good example of one American product not yet owned by Chinese investment bankers is pure, guitar driven, beer soaked, wet-shirt contest winner Rock N Roll. Seven Dirty Words - Nate, (Drums), Silvio, (Lead Guitar) Joel, (Rhythm Guitar) and Brian (Lead Vox and Bass, Ex Los Griswolds) are at the forefront of this great American movement which has been steadily gaining steam since punk discovered or admitted they really liked rippin solos, songs about fucking and fast cars.

CD Reviews: CD-Review-The Cavity Creeps-4 Song Demo
Im holding in my hand a four song demo of Detroit's own Cavity Creeps. I've heard the songs enough, all four of them, You're So Punk, Take My Heart, The Hooligans, and Motorcity Decay, both on their page and live. So what's new about holding a CD? Now I can take it in my car, listen at work, and there is something to be said for having the actual music in my hands and owning it, not just a file on the computer.

Motherbox Records puts out some loud ass rock n roll, most of which I've dug the hell out of. So when Bulldozers CD The Hammers didn't inspire Sid Sneers, and headbanging I figured I owed it another listen.

I admire the concept of trios - one drummer, one guitar, and bass. One or all handling vocals. It takes real talent to pull off a trio, no one to really cover your ass if you're talentless. The Fury handle this challenge quite adeptly.
